Abstract
With the development of the times and the progress of human civilization, many English and American literary works have been remade into films. As a way only recorded by text, the novel is adapted into a film with multimodal characteristics consisting of images, videos and audio, etc. The way stories are told has changed, the feelings that the novel brings to the readers have changed greatly. In 1996, Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure was remade into a film called Jude, which selectively focused on Jude's life in the book in nearly two hours. Taking Jude the Obscure (In Marygreen) as an example, this paper analyzes the differences between pure text novels reading and the multimodal films based on novels from three aspects: the main idea of the text, the characterization and the description of the environment. Hoping to bring some inspiration to the learners of English and American literature.
