Abstract

According to IELTS Average Scores for Academic by Country 2021 British Council released this year, China ranked 32nd on the list with overall average of 5.8, failing to surpass the global average of 6.2, while listening and speaking averages for Chinese IELTS candidates came out particularly undesirable, which calls for more effective teaching strategies to tackle the de facto problem. Accordingly, IELTS teaching is expected to attach great importance to fostering students' proficiency in language use, and the cultivation of listening and speaking ability undoubtedly counts in this regard. Based on cause analysis, this paper attempts to work out strategies for enhancing students' English listening and speaking proficiency in three spheres, i.e., consolidating phonetic skills, accumulating background knowledge of language & culture, and diversifying teaching design of classroom activities. This paper basically follows the research approach of deductive reasoning and the method of case study. An classroom experiment is also introduced to expound the importance of diversified teaching designs.
