Abstract
Willa Cather, a famous American writer in the early 20th century, makes a significant contribution to the development of American literature through her novels. She portrays distinctive and various images of pioneers by focusing on the lives of common people, and depicts a vivid social and historical picture of the American Westward Movement. Neighbour Rosicky is one of her masterpieces on the subject of pioneers. The novel narrates Rosicky’s life in a simple and pure language and portrays an ideal and perfect character. With an androgynous personality Rosicky realizes his inner self-harmony, family harmony and the harmony between human and nature, presenting readers a warm and beautiful picture of frontier life. In the light of the theory of androgyny this paper explores the personality of the protagonist Rosicky, through which she expresses her worship of the pioneers’ spirit and her pursuit of a perfect personality of androgyny.
