A Preliminary Study of the Situation of Secondary Schools in Henan during the New Deal of the Late Qing Dynasty

Abstract
During the ten-year New Deal at the end of Qing Dynasty, secondary schools were founded all over Henan. This was the early stage of the development of secondary education in Henan, and a turning point for Henan education, laying the foundation of secondary education in Henan. Educational reform is a huge and systematic social project, which not only brings about the reconstruction and innovation of internal factors of education, but also reflects the mechanisms and characteristics of the whole government and society at the time of reform. A comprehensive reform of the imperial examination education system, which lasted for more than a thousand years in ancient China, would inevitably be accompanied by difficulties, especially in Henan, which was in economic decline and conservative in its outlook. The article examines various aspects of secondary education in Henan at that time, particularly the situation of teachers and students, the curriculum, the use of textbooks, sources of funding, examinations and graduation, with the aim of understanding the actual state of secondary education in Henan at the end of the Qing Dynasty.
