Relationship between English Literature and Economy in Victorian Era Exemplified in Charles Dickens’s Works

Abstract

The creation of many literary works is often closely related to the social back-ground of that period. In the history of English literature, the critical realism literature in the Victorian period is particularly prominent in reflecting the reality, among which Dickens is an outstanding representative. The paper selects typical Dickens’s works and Victorian society as the research object, analyzes the mapping of these economic phenomena in literary works from the perspective of economy. The paper analyzes economic phenomenon appeared in Dickens's three typical works and some other related works and compares it with the Victorian Britain's economic phenomenon, so as to explore the influence economic background of the British on literary works, economic phenomena mapping in the literary works, as well as the effect of literature on the economic development. It is found that literary works can also reflect economic phenomena and have influence on economy, which provides new ideas and directions for the study of literary works.
