Abstract

This research work presents a unique method of making composite from poly-cotton (polyester/cotton blend fabric) directly from hot press machine with controlled parameters: pressure range 0.28-1.4 MPa, temperature 270oC and time 300s. Cooling rate was neglected while the temperature and time where kept constant. The mechanical strength of the composite was investigated. To achieve this, two samples, the composite and untreated cotton were tested. The tensile stress-strain test was used to determine different targeted properties of the poly-cotton. The mechanical properties of the composite determined include Young modulus, strength and strain. The parameters chosen for the experiment show a positive result, as our experimental results describe a linear relationship between the parameters. Conclusively, the tested recycled poly-cotton composite statistics show a measurable improvement in their properties and can be recommended for re-use in the textiles industries rather than constitutes an environmental nuisance.
