Morphological and Morphometric Characterization of Indigenous Chicken in Enarj Enawga and Enemay District, East Gojjam Zone, Amhara Region, Ethiopia

Abstract

This study was undertaken to characterize and differentiate chicken types in Enarj Enawga and Enemay districts based on phenotypic traits using field measurement and structured questionnaire. Three kebeles from each district were selected purposely based on chicken population for this study. There was a hypothesis that the breed exhibit different morphological character. For morphological characterization, body weight and linear measurements were taken from 660 adult chickens (300 females and 60 males from each district) greater than one year old. Both Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) and Statistical Analysis System (SAS) software were used to analysis qualitative and quantitative data. The results indicated that all observed morphological charac-ters were not significantly associated (P<0.01) between districts except comb type, ear mark presence and feather morphology (not significant associated, P>0.05). The predominant plumage colors of female chickens were brown-ish/dirra (39.67%) and white (27.33%) for Enarj Enawga and Enemay districts, respectively. The predominant plumage colors of male chicken were red (33.33%) and white with red strips/seranma (73.33%) for Enarj Enawga and Enemay districts, respectively. White shank and yellowish ear lobe color was the main unique characteristics of male chicken in Enemay male chicken (83.33% shank color and 63.33% ear lobe color) than for Enarj Enawga chicken. There was significant difference for body weight and all recorded linear body measurements (P<0.01) among the districts except shank circumference, neck length, comb width and wattle width of chickens. The recorded body weight were1.40±0.01 and 1.52±0.02 for chicken in Enarj Enawga and Enemay, respectively. Sex of animals had significant effect (P<0.01) on the linear body measurements and live body weight. Highest body length, body weight, chest circumference, wattle width, wattle length, comb length, comb width, beak length, shank length, shank circumference and back length (P<0.05) and except keel bone length were recorded for male chicken. In general, this result showed that chicken population in Enemay was found to be unique in morphological and quantitative measurements.
