Use of Blended Instructional Models Among Faculty of Education Lecturers in Public Universities in South East Nigeria

Abstract

The study investigated the use of blended instructional models among faculty of education lecturers in public universities in south east Nigeria. Two research questions and one null hypothesis were formulated and used in the study. A descriptive survey design was adopted. A total of 1216 faculty of education lecturers across eight federal and state universities formed the population of the study. The sample consisted of 275 lecturers made up of 124 males and 151 females drawn using Taro – Yamane formula. To reach the respondents' lecturers, a stratified, proportionate, and simple random sampling technique was used. The number of respondents drawn from each institution was determined using the percentage proportionate contribution of the universities. The percentage contribution is as follows: Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka (72); University of Nigeria Nsukka (81);  Alex Ekwueme University Ndufu – Alike (21); Abia State University (15), Ebonyi State University (30); Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (10); Imo State University (28); and Enugu State University of Science and Technology (18). A 20-item structured questionnaire titled ‘Use of Blended Instructional Models Questionnaire’ (UBIMQ) validated by three experts with a reliability coefficient of 0.72 was used as an instrument for data collection. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions while the hypothesis was tested with an independent t-test statistical tool at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that faculty of education lecturers often use blended instructional models in their instructional processes. It further revealed that no significant difference existed between male and female lecturers in their use of blended instructional models. It was recommended among others that lecturers should continue to use blended instructional models in teaching and learning. This is because constant usage of this innovative instructional strategy will help improve their instructional competencies and students’ academic performance.
