“5W” Analysis: Interdisciplinary Exhibitions at China’s Re-making Museums

Abstract

This paper is based on the "5W" communication model proposed by the American communication scholar Lasswell (1948), which includes the following components: sender and receiver (who) - message content (what is said) - medium and platform (in which channel) - intended recipients (to whom) - impact on the audience (what effect). In light of the challenges posed by the globalization of art, an analysis of three interdisciplinary exhibitions held at the Reinventing Museums in Beijing and Shanghai, China, reveals the collaborative practices of these exhibitions within and beyond the art field. It compares and explores the significance of different forms of interdisciplinary curation in reshaping museum exhibitions in China. Also, it considers the importance of diversifying interdisciplinary exhibitions in the Chinese curatorial industry within the context of globalization. Additionally, we should examine the diversity of the Chinese art ecosystem that underlies these exhibitions and the trend toward fostering a more open dialogue and exchange with the international art world.
