Abstract

English Language Teaching (ELT) projects have been launched in China for decades. Numerous Chinese teachers took advantage of the human and material resources from English-speaking countries. They attempted to equip themselves with adequate language knowledge and teaching pedagogies to improve, but problems gradually arose. This paper reviews the implementation of ELT projects in China in recent years, including the historical background and the changes made by the project. It also discussed the current issues with the project, such as the absence of records indicating its effectiveness from the locals' perspective and doubts about the educational quality being prioritized over financial gains. Finally, the implications highlight the importance of changing the current situation and amplifying the voices of recipient countries. It is undeniable that ELT projects still have a long way to go before they bring more benefits than problems to teachers and language teaching in the Chinese context.
