Abstract

In interpersonal communication, facial expression plays an important role. Investigating how people read other individuals' facial expressions could help improve the understanding of a person's perception. This study aims to explore the way people observe different types of human facial expressions, namely happy and neutral expressions. Eye-tracking methodology is employed to capture quantitative data and track participants' gaze patterns. Three facial images from three different people are used as stimuli, and the areas of interest are classified into four categories: eyes, mouth, nose, and the rest of the face. Twenty participants were recruited and divided into two groups. Group one viewed faces with happy expressions, while the other group viewed faces with neutral expressions. The results revealed a significant preference among subjects for gazing at happy facial expressions over neutral facial expressions. Participants showed greater interest in the charming facial expressions, as evidenced by longer total fixation duration and increased fixation counts. When viewing images of faces, individuals tended to focus on the eyes of others more frequently and for longer periods. The first fixation duration on neutral faces is significantly higher than that on pleasant faces, indicating people's vigilance in the early processing stage. Future studies could include more types of emotional faces while inviting subjects from different cultural backgrounds to explore the cross-cultural influence of emotional face recognition. Understanding the features of emotional face recognition can help people recognize information through facial expressions in daily communication. Additionally, this research will provide new inspiration and direction for future studies in this field.
