Abstract

Gender has always been a popular theme in artists' works, and artists' expressions of the subject of the body have varied greatly from one historical period to another. The creation of gender art is inseparable from its carrier, the body, and the characteristics of body art, like the larger category of art to which it belongs, conceptual art, seeks a blurring of boundaries and a transgression of boundaries. Contemporary body art can be understood as a transgressive act of seeking the possibilities of the body, breaking the usual boundaries of the physical body and body discourse, pushing the topic of the body to more possible fields with individualised language, behaviour, and interaction, and seeking various possibilities of the body and life. Gender as a visual symbol related to the body is also changing from a fixed to an unknown, ambiguous, variable, and borderless direction. With the development of technology, the body is transforming human-computer coupling, gender is also undergoing a gradual deconstruction and dissolution from the traditional dichotomy. This paper focuses on how the gender of body artworks in the field of digital art blurs the original boundaries and thus leads to the disintegration of the binary opposition. The main body of this paper has two parts. The first part discusses the process of the development of gender art and the changes in expression and content during the period from feminism to post-feminism to cyber-feminism. The second part discusses how the visual symbol of "gender" in the context of "posthuman" body art is free from the dichotomy, which has three models: (1) Weakening the viewer's awareness of the subject of the work about gender. (2) Human-computer coupling in a future utopian world written based on computer algorithm technology, thus achieving gender uncertainty and variability. (3) The audience interacts with the machine based on their body parameters, thus transferring self-awareness from the sexual organs to other organs and indicators in the body.
