Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increasing transfer of audiovisual production between China and the West. A growing number of Chinese films and television series have made their way onto the global stage, receiving positive reception from audiences. The primary objective of this investigation is to conduct an analysis of the culture-specific elements, known as “culturemas”, that appear in the Chinese television series Nirvana in Fire. Additionally, the study aims to examine the strategies employed by the English and Spanish translators of the series to address these culturemas. There is a tendency to emulate solutions found in the English subtitles, with decisions often made in an ad-hoc and negligent manner, leading to solutions that are either incomplete or difficult to comprehend. This study aims to provide tools that aid in overcoming the barrier of culturemas and enable Western viewers to develop a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and history. These productions have impacted global audiences, particularly in Spain and Latin America, attributed to their captivating narratives and intricate character developments.
