Abstract

This comprehensive review assesses qualitative research from the past decade concerning cognitive load and multitasking. It examines the various types of cognitive load, their amplification under multitasking conditions, and the intricate relationship between cognitive load and emotional responses. The review emphasizes how multitasking significantly increases cognitive load, especially in environments with complex tasks or extensive information. Additionally, the paper delves into effective cognitive load management strategies and evaluates the role of technological tools in reducing cognitive load and enhancing efficiency in task completion. Key findings underscore a complex interplay between emotional states and cognitive load, indicating that well-designed management strategies and technological supports are crucial for optimizing cognitive efficiency. The review also suggests future research directions, including the necessity for a more in-depth exploration of the effects of different task types and complexities on cognitive load, as well as the significance of cross-cultural studies to expand our comprehension of how multitasking influences cognitive processes across diverse populations.
