Abstract
This paper summarises and reviews studies on the barriers to export for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) over the past decade. It concludes that the current barriers can be categorized into two main dimensions: internal and external barriers. Internal barriers include information barriers, human resource barriers, financial barriers, and market barriers. External barriers, which are factors beyond the control of the firms, encompass procedural barriers, competitive barriers, governmental barriers, and macroeconomic barriers. Further research has identified six prominent challenges that SMEs face in exporting. Among these, a lack of understanding of potential market information is the most significant issue. Additionally, some scholars have examined the factors specific to different countries. Therefore, while there are studies that have identified the internal barriers that SMEs should prioritize, they must also consider the unique circumstances of their respective countries and regions.
