Abstract

The cognitive frameworks of Eastern and Western cultures exhibit significant differences, which are reflected in the unique linguistic characteristics of their respective languages. This study explores the discourse system of English compositions, utilizing students’ writing exercises as a practical lens to identify common issues and explore strategies for improving writing proficiency. By integrating the cultivation of critical thinking—an increasingly popular pedagogical approach in China—into English writing education, this research analyzes the existing challenges in students’ compositions and the methods of discourse analysis. The aim is to explore corresponding countermeasures that can help college students enhance their writing standards. This integration not only enriches the narrative quality of stories told by Chinese individuals but also strengthens China’s international communication capabilities. By focusing on refining writing skills and fostering critical thinking, the study contributes to bridging cultural gaps and promoting a deeper global understanding of Chinese perspectives.
