Urban Infrastructure Design for Advocating Pedal Power

Abstract

With the growth of urban populations and the proliferation of private vehicles, issues such as urban traffic congestion, air pollution, and the occupation of public spaces by private cars have become increasingly severe. This paper explores how urban infrastructure construction can promote bicycle travel to create a clean, spacious, and smooth traffic environment. The article analyzes the transformation of urban infrastructure in three different regions: Melbourne, Australia; China; and the Netherlands, demonstrating the social benefits brought by non-motorized transportation. Melbourne has invested in bicycle road planning and infrastructure, establishing bicycle corridors and physically separated full-time bicycle lanes, thereby improving the safety and efficiency of cyclists. China has effectively alleviated traffic congestion and created more public spaces through its shared bicycle policy. The Netherlands has enhanced the attractiveness of cycling by constructing an independent bicycle network and providing safe and comfortable bicycle infrastructure. These measures have not only improved urban traffic safety but also promoted health and environmental protection, as well as strengthened social inclusiveness and public space, showcasing the key role of design in promoting environmentally friendly, inclusive, and healthy urban bicycle travel.
