Abstract

Based on the goal of enriching the construction of general education system in Chinese colleges and universities, this study explores the dilemma of reforming general education in applied colleges and universities and its strategies. The study systematizes the development of liberal education or general education in Chinese higher education organizations, the development of applied colleges and universities, and the development of general education and general competency cultivation in applied colleges and universities. After defining the gap, the study describes the group’s efforts on building a teaching system in its college and first-round results. Then the study emphasizes that the general ability should be integrated with the goal of applied education and individual characteristics of students, and should be based on the long-term development and fully consider the elements of the construction of lifelong learning system. At the same time, the implementation of the teaching process should focus on leveraging the wisdom of colleges and universities to support the development of the surrounding community. This approach aims to enhance the overall quality of students and their practical application of knowledge. Through the construction of “one body, two wings and three main axes” teaching system of general competency, we can cultivate high-quality applied talents to meet the needs of the society in the era of digital intelligence, and promote the sustainable and optimized development of applied universities.
