Abstract

This review examines the many ways music and adolescent mental health are connected. It highlights the need for a full understanding that goes beyond seeing music as simply good or bad. Using a thematic review method, the study analyzed 114 peer-reviewed articles from the past decade. It identified five key themes: the positive impact of music on adolescent mental health; music as a tool for intervention in adolescent mental health; the negative impact of music on adolescent mental health; performance anxiety among young musicians; and an integrated view of music’s influence on adolescent mental health. The findings show that music’s impact on teenagers is complex and multidimensional, influenced by cultural, social, economic, biological, environmental, and personal factors. The review emphasizes the importance of avoiding oversimplified views and using a critical perspective when considering music’s role in mental well-being. Teachers should provide diverse materials, adapt methods, and support students’ mental health through music.
