Comparing Intensive and Extensive Grammar Teaching: Insights from Secondary Education

Abstract

In this research, the efficiency of intense and comprehensive grammar teaching in secondary English classes is compared and contrasted. When it comes to grammar education, intensive instruction places an emphasis on teaching grammar explicitly, while comprehensive instruction incorporates grammar implicitly via conversation and real texts. Throughout the course of four weeks, two distinct groups of pupils in Year 9 received different teaching. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered, with the former coming from grammar exams and the latter from surveys and journals. According to the findings, intensive education led to an improvement in explicit grammatical knowledge, while extended instruction demonstrated an improvement in fluency and contextual usage. In order to maximize the acquisition of grammar and provide direction for the development of curricula, the research shows that both techniques have merit and proposes a way that is balanced. Last but not least, this study has undergone some kind of development.
