Abstract

Traditional approaches to teaching ethnic music in higher education often struggle to engage students, resulting in passive learning and a superficial understanding of the rich cultural context. This article proposes an innovative pedagogical model that leverages the format of the musical to integrate local ethnic music—using Mongolian music as a case study—into university music classrooms. This student-centered, project-based approach is designed to enhance musical literacy and learning interest by transforming students from passive recipients of information into active creators. By participating in the entire process of producing a musical—from historical research and scriptwriting to musical arrangement and performance—students engage in a multi-dimensional learning experience that encompasses theory, practice, history, and culture. This model addresses common dilemmas in ethnic music education, such as the lack of practical resources and the disconnect from ideological and political education, by fostering a deep, interactive, and embodied understanding of cultural heritage. The article argues that this approach not only improves artistic skills but also significantly strengthens students’ cultural confidence and identity, aligning with the broader goals of ethnic unity and cultural inheritance in higher education.
