Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the clinical efficacy of medium-frequency electrotherapy combined with highly selective vidian neurectomy in the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) comorbid with allergic rhinitis (AR). Methods: Ninety-seven patients with CRS and AR admitted to the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University between October 2023 and January 2025 were enrolled as subjects and randomly assigned to either a control group or a study group. The control group consists of 49 people, and the study group consists of 48 people. The control group underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) combined with highly selective vidian neurectomy, while the study group received additional medium-frequency electrical stimulation therapy based on the same surgical intervention. Clinical data from before surgery and 6 months postoperatively were compared and analyzed using the Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), 20-Item Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-20), and the modified Lund-Kennedy endoscopic mucosal appearance scoring system. Results: Analysis of the 97 successfully followed-up cases with complete clinical data at the study endpoint revealed that at 6 months postoperatively, VAS scores significantly decreased from baseline in both groups, with a statistically significant difference in the improvement of nasal symptoms. RQLQ score analysis showed a significantly greater reduction in the study group compared to the control group (Z=-6.844, P < 0.001). Intergroup comparison of the modified Lund-Kennedy scores indicated a more pronounced advantage in the study group (Z=-6.632, P<0.001). Conclusion: The study demonstrates that medium-frequency electrotherapy combined with highly selective vidian neurectomy yields significant clinical benefits in treating CRS comorbid with AR, effectively alleviating patients’ symptoms and signs, and improving their quality of life.
