Dear Colleagues,
As technological advancements accelerate across the globe, understanding how gender relations shape, and are shaped by, these innovations and the resulting cultural transformations is of critical importance. Contemporary dynamics in the Global South are not isolated phenomena; diverse historical and ongoing experiences offer a rich repository of human agency, resistance, and adaptation that can inform more equitable and context-sensitive approaches to technological change. A comparative, multi-scalar perspective allows us to move beyond isolated case studies and identify patterns, pathways, and principles of gender-inclusive innovation and cultural resilience across different societies, regions, and historical moments.
This special issue aims to explore the complex relationship between gender, technology, and cultural transformation in the Global South through the integrated lenses of history, sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies. It seeks to bring together rigorous research that examines how diverse communities, from local to transnational scales, have perceived, negotiated, and responded to technological shifts and their intersections with gender norms and power structures. We are particularly interested in work that bridges disciplines and methodologies to draw actionable insights for contemporary policy, design, and inclusive development. Topics of interest include:
• Gendered dimensions of technology access, adoption, and innovation in the Global South
• Digital technologies and transformations in gender roles, identities, and social relations
• Feminist and postcolonial perspectives on technology design and implementation
• Artificial intelligence, automation, and their gendered impacts on labor and economies
• Community-based and participatory technology initiatives led by women and marginalized groups
• Cultural resistance, adaptation, and hybridity in response to technological change
• Ethical, legal, and policy considerations in gender-equitable technology development
• Historical and contemporary case studies of technology-driven cultural transformations
We welcome original research articles, case studies, and reviews that contribute to advancing the dialogue and practice in this dynamic and evolving field.
