The Changing Landscape of Teacher Professionalism: Autonomy, Agency, and New Roles

Dear Colleagues,

As the complexity and demands on the teaching profession continue to expand, the need for innovative methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches to understand, support, and redefine teacher professionalism has become increasingly critical. Teacher education and professionalism studies stand at the forefront of this transformation, offering new pathways for analyzing and strengthening teacher autonomy, agency, and professional identity in rapidly changing educational landscapes. Meanwhile, the rise of new policy frameworks, accountability systems, and digital technologies presents both unprecedented opportunities for professional empowerment and significant challenges in maintaining autonomy and redefining teacher roles.

This special issue aims to explore the intersection of teacher professionalism, autonomy, agency, and new roles. It seeks to highlight cutting-edge research, theoretical innovations, and empirical studies that enhance our understanding and support of teacher professionalism in contemporary education systems. Topics of interest include:

• Changing concepts and practices of teacher autonomy in policy and school contexts

• Teacher agency and professional identity in times of educational reform

• New roles of teachers in digital, hybrid, and inclusive learning environments

• Impact of accountability systems and standardization on teacher professionalism

• Professional development models supporting teacher autonomy and agency

• Comparative perspectives on teacher professionalism across cultures and systems

• Ethical and leadership dimensions of evolving teacher roles

• Policy frameworks and school-level strategies for sustaining teacher professionalism

We welcome original research articles, case studies, and reviews that contribute to advancing the dialogue and practice in this dynamic and evolving field.
