As digital communication increasingly transcends linguistic boundaries, the need for innovative methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches to develop, evaluate, and deploy NLP systems for underrepresented languages has become increasingly critical. Computational linguistics and cultural preservation stand at the forefront of this transformation, offering new pathways for enabling equitable access to information and digital services across diverse linguistic communities. Meanwhile, the rise of language technologies presents both unprecedented opportunities for preserving linguistic heritage and significant challenges in addressing data scarcity, capturing cultural nuances, and maintaining model fairness and usability across low-resource settings.
This special issue aims to explore the intersection of natural language processing, low-resource languages, cultural contexts, and inclusive technology design. It seeks to highlight cutting-edge research, algorithmic innovations, and community-driven frameworks that enhance the creation, implementation, and ethical stewardship of language technologies for marginalized language communities. Topics of interest include:
• Data-efficient and transfer learning for low-resource NLP
• Interdisciplinary frameworks for integrating culture and linguistics in models
• Equity, access, and digital inclusion for minority and indigenous speakers
• The evolving role of community engagement in language technology development
• Ethical and bias mitigation in multilingual and cross-cultural NLP systems
• Data sovereignty, corpus building, and speaker agency in low-resource documentation
• Comparative studies on NLP performance across language families and resource levels
• Policy and capacity building for sustainable language technology ecosystems
We welcome original research articles, case studies, and reviews that contribute to advancing the dialogue and practice in this dynamic and evolving field.
Manuscript Submission Information
Authors should submit their manuscripts for the special issue by emailing them as an attachment to specialissue@hillpublish.com or by using the online submission system. The manuscript should be submitted by one of the authors, and submissions by anyone other than the authors will not be accepted. Additionally, the submitted manuscript should include a cover letter that specifies the special issue to which the manuscript is being submitted.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). The submitted papers should be properly formatted and written in fluent English. All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process.
